Why are Ductile Iron pipes coated with an asphaltic sealcoat on the outside

The external asphaltic sealcoat is a standard protective layer for ductile iron pipes, and it serves multiple practical purposes to safeguard the pipes during transportation, installation and long-term underground service.

First and foremost, it provides effective corrosion protection. Buried ductile iron pipes are constantly exposed to underground soil, groundwater, moisture and various chemical substances. The compact asphalt coating forms a continuous waterproof barrier, isolating the pipe surface from corrosive media such as acids, alkalis and salts in the soil. It prevents electrochemical corrosion and rust formation on the outer wall, which is the core function of this coating and greatly extends the service life of the pipeline.

Secondly, it offers mechanical damage resistance. During handling, transportation, trenching and pipe laying, the pipe surface may collide with hard objects, rocks and construction tools. The asphaltic layer has good flexibility and cushioning performance. It can resist scratches, abrasions and minor impacts, avoiding direct damage to the base metal and the primary anti-corrosion structure of the pipe.

In addition, the asphalt sealcoat features excellent adhesion and adaptability. It adheres firmly to the surface of ductile iron and will not peel off easily under normal ground settlement or slight pipe deformation. Meanwhile, this material works stably across a wide temperature range, neither softening in high-temperature environments nor becoming brittle and cracking in cold conditions, maintaining intact protection all year round.

Moreover, this coating is economical and convenient for engineering applications. Asphalt-based materials are cost-effective and easy to apply in mass production, which fits the large-scale production demand of pipeline products. It also has good compatibility with backfill materials after pipe burial, and will not produce adverse chemical reactions with common soil and gravel.

To sum up, the external asphaltic sealcoat mainly acts as a durable anti-corrosion and wear-resistant barrier. It comprehensively protects ductile iron pipes from underground corrosion and mechanical damage, ensuring stable and reliable operation of the pipeline system for a long time.
